Pipilomatena (Gümüşhane)

The dance Pipilomatena, also known as Patula, was danced throughout Pontus. In the eastern regions it was called Pipilomatena after the song of the same name. In Pontic Greek the term pipilomatis means small eyes. In the west of Pontus the dance was called Patula which means a girl who is plump and has very white skin. In the early part of the 20th century these characteristics were desirable in a female of marriageable age. A dance with slight variations was danced in the Galyan region and was called Kori Kopela.
